Winter Ring SmallWinterizing Your Home

Winter is coming!

Some of you reading this is feeling the bite of old man winter right now. For those of us in the south we might have a few days of sleet. Late October is a good time to get ready for the harder cold months ahead. Here are some tips and ideas for winterizing your home and preparing.

Inspect your AC unit to make sure it is running and properly ventilated. The AC unit should not be in a window or in a place where it can be covered by snow. Make sure to shut off the unit if not needed in winter. If it is a dual central AC system, make sure to change filters and check the condenser for any blockage.

Next, make sure that the pipes are insulated and that they are not exposed to freezing temperatures. Check the insulation around pipes near sinks, bathtubs, water heaters and outdoor areas.

Use caulk to seal any gaps in the door and wood frames of your home.

Every few years it’s a good idea to have a professional come in and check the wiring, plumbing and roofing in your home. Most stuff can be caught by the average person. But some problems are hidden from us and can bite our pocket book when we least expect it. The professional will also make sure that the foundation is solid and that there are no leaks in the basement.

Lastly, inspect your roof for any damage or leaks as well as for any loose shingles or tiles. If you see any of these problems you will want to fix them before winter hits so it doesn't cause bigger problems later on down the road.
