T's Tips: Weathering the Storm

If you are new to the hurricane area, which many I bet are due to the huge shift in population as of late, then you may want to heed some advice on how to weather a hurricane.

Depending on where you are located and the track of the storm, the best personal protection is to FLEE! Run away.
Get out of town.
But before you go try, and secure your property as best as you can. Below are a few tips that my family, who lives in Florida, have suggested.
• Get everything off the floor.
• Secure Doors and Windows as best as possible.
• Stow anything outside that can fly away.
• Stock up on essential items such as water, canned food, medicines, personal items

Home Improvement ToolsPreparing for the Hurricane

This week the editor Richard Leon will talk about additional tips and tricks for setting up your family and home for survival during a hurricane.

If you live along the eastern coastline of America, you will experience a hurricane in your life.

More than likely, you have already experienced a few Hurricanes. Some life changing. Others more of a stay home type of ordeal. If you are lucky, you might avoid damages. Sadly, most who are in the path of a hurricane are affected. There have been 56 climate disasters in the last three years which occurred in the US with losses over 1 billion.

The best thing you can do is plan ahead.

Both the CDC and FEMA have excellent information for you to use in making plans for the next hurricane.

Here are some tips for you to put into a good Hurricane Emergency plan:

As you prepare to leave make sure you use these tips to secure your home.

  • Make sure all doors are hurricane resistant. They should have three hinges and a deadbolt that is 1 inch long.
  • Protect all glass windows/ glass doors with storm shutters or plywood
  • Remove all weak branches and small trees
  • Remove/ Replace all gravel and rock
  • Seal outside wall openings (like electrical outlets)
  • Make sure to identify and listen to all emergency radio stations.
