It’s that time of year when we start to hang those lights for all the holidays. We now have lights for ALL the holidays and even ones I was unaware of. So, what’s the big deal about the lights? Ever see those movies where they overload a circuit with lights and blow a fuse or pop a breaker? Well, that can really happen. Or worse, it can short out if improperly done. These items talked about here are simply something to investigate and think about before you begin adding enough lights that the space shuttle ask you turn them down so they can get some sleep.
Consider that a typical circuit break in a normal home is 15amps. That plenty really. A single 100 watt bulb will draw 1amp a typical 110 volts house circuit.(Not going to get in the weeds with exact number because we are not hold a class on electrical mathematical formulas.) So read up on the lights and see how many “Watts” they will pull and at what voltage. My experience is that it’s than ½Amps. With the newer LED lights, It may be even less.
Now consider how many you’re going to stream together or have on a circuit. (Note here: The circuit can include several outlets so simply plugging into another outlet may still draw from the same circuit breaker.) Think also about the blowup waving Santa or Singing Turkey or whatever people get these days.
Remember as well, those breakers are also loading the INSIDE as well. Hairdryers, Coffee Pots, Toasters, Stove, Refrigerator, etc. may also be on that circuit. Once it hits 15Amps (Or gets close for a while for some types) will POP or TRIP or worse NOT. If they fail, this can cause and overheated circuit which may result in a fire. So do your due diligence and research a little or have someone else do it.
