Homes wear down over time. Mold build-up is common. Dirt collects all over the house along with cobwebs and bug nests. When your home is looking worn and tired, give it a good pressure wash on the sides, sidewalks, decks and other hard surfaces.

What is power washing? (Or pressure washing those of you new to home improvement).

Power washing is a process of spraying water at high pressure to remove dirt, mold, and other debris from hard surfaces. The process can be used for many different things including sidewalks, homes, decks and garages. We often neglect power washing our home’s exterior because we don’t realize how much of an effect it has on the appearance of our home. It also helps to remove the buildup of dirt and grime that can cause damage to your home’s exterior.

There are risks that can come with power washing your home. If used improperly, the process can cause water and chemicals to enter through your home’s siding which can lead to mold and mildew growth. If you notice any damage on your home’s exterior, it is recommended that you contact a professional before attempting any type of power washing.

The following are some tips on using a power washer:

  • Always wear protective gear when using the power washer.
  • Keep the power washer moving to avoid damaging the surface being cleaned.
  • Use a good, biodegradable detergent made for the surface you are cleaning.
  • Start away from the surface to be cleaned then spray on the surface once the pressure washer is working at 100%.
  • Spray from top to bottom and then side to side.
  • Loosen up the dirt first with plain water, then apply the detergent.
  • Avoid spraying on plants or trees as it will damage them.
  • Keep the power washer in an upright position when spraying.
  • After using the power washer, always rinse it with water and make sure it is fully dry before putting away.
  • If a power washer becomes damaged and stops working, contact the location where you bought it from.
  • DO not use on Asphalt Shingles, Stained Wood, Lead Paint, Old Mortar, Your Car or Truck, Glass Surfaces, Gutters, AC Units, People and Animals (This should be obvious to some)
